Udawalawa

Udawalawe, located in southern Sri Lanka, is one of the best places on the island to experience wildlife in its natural habitat, especially Asian elephants. The area is centered around Udawalawe National Park, a dry-zone sanctuary that offers fantastic year-round wildlife safaris.

The park is home to over 500 elephants, as well as water buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species, including eagles, hornbills, and peacocks. It’s a favorite among photographers and nature lovers due to its open grasslands, beautiful reservoirs, and consistent sightings.

Udawalawe also hosts the Elephant Transit Home (ETH), a rehabilitation center for orphaned baby elephants run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Visitors can watch elephants being fed and prepared for eventual release into the wild — an experience that’s both heartwarming and educational.

With its peaceful rural charm, affordable safaris, and proximity to other southern destinations, Udawalawe is a must-stop for any wildlife-focused itinerary in Sri Lanka.
